Is My Child Ready for Overnight Camp?
There is no single moment or checklist that determines whether a child is ready for overnight camp. Readiness looks different for every child.
At Camp Laurelwood, we encourage families to think about emotional flexibility rather than perfection. A child does not need to be fearless or completely independent to thrive at camp. They need curiosity, openness, and the ability to try something new with support.
Many children arrive at camp feeling nervous or unsure. That does not mean they are not ready. In fact, those feelings often signal that camp is a meaningful step forward.
Younger and first time campers receive additional structure, consistency, and supervision. Predictable routines and familiar faces help children settle in and feel secure. Our staff understand that reassurance and patience are essential during the early days.
Camp is often the place where children discover that they are capable of more than they thought. Readiness is not something children must bring with them. It is something they build while they are here.
